My husband and I have been using and promoting the use of soapy water as a bug killer for years. We also position a bug zapper a few feet outside the garden area and turn it on at night to attract the egg layers. Actually, the bug zapper works so well, we rarely have a bug problem to deal with!

Love the sq ft garden! You can skip the “investment” part and use free materials to build something of a lasagna bed (Patricia Lanza). I’m pretty cheap (and lazy), so that’s become my preferred method. Of four different planting methods (sq ft being one of them), the lasagna is my top producer — and required the least amount of work, $$, and materials. I have yet to build the keystone, but that’s coming as soon as it cools off. Want to see how that does for water retention (we just recovered from a year-long drought).

Do you live near or know anyone with a farm? For our garden, we till in some rotted manure – we have lots from our horses and give it away by the truckload. Very economic.

Wow, seriously, 25 years? I just might have to try this. Could I do it with Tillamook cheddar cheese I buy in the store. The price fluctuates so much that I like to buy a lot when it goes on sale, but I didn’t know how to preserve it.
